Imogene (Kristen Wiig) is your average American girl who dreams big but fails to achieve. She wanted to be a playwright and almost succeeded, but she missed her once in a lifetime opportunity. She didn't really mind; she was okay as long as she had a boyfriend, a job and a bunch of friends.
But when she loses her job, goes through a painful breakup, and realizes her friends aren't reliable, she can't take it anymore. Willing to do whatever it takes to get the attention of her ex, she decides to fake a suicide. When she's taken to the hospital and no one's there at her side, the doctor has no choice but to call her mother.
However, since Zelda (Annette Bening) wasn't exactly what you'd call a great mom, their relationship is quite complicated. Everyone thinks Imogene is truly suicidal, so she is forced to go back home with her mother. As soon as she gets there, she discovers her room has been rented to a guy named Lee (Darren Criss), and that Zelda is in a relationship with a weirdo, "The Bousch" (Matt Dillon).
After having to process a lot, Imogene realizes she has to accept her family and New Jersey roots in order to get stable. SPOILER ALERT: she starts a relationship with Lee, who helps her get better.
You will enjoy watching this indie movie, that's entertaining and a good pick for a sleep-over or movie-night with your friends.
