Originally from Sidney, 19 year-old Calum Hood (bass/vocals) and Michael Clifford (guitar/vocals) were high-school best-friends. One of their classmates, 18 year-old Luke Hemmings (lead singer), used to post covers on YouTube. The 3 teamed up and started a band, which Michael decided to name "5 Seconds Of Summer". But when they finally got a gig, they were missing a drummer and were forced to pick one over social medias. On the 3rd of December 2011, they found the perfect match for their band: 20 year-old Ashton Irwin. Even though no more than a dozen people attended their first gig, the boys didn't give up.
They toured on week-ends until November 2012, when One Direction's Louis Tomlinson tweeted about their song "Gotta Get Out". That same year, 5 SOS managed to release an EP "Somewhere New" and a single "Out Of My Limit", before proudly announcing in February 2013 that they were 1D's opening act in the Take Me Home tour. That's when their popularity started to increase, allowing them to release a new single, "She looks so perfect".
5 Seconds Of Summer became the 4th Aussie band to ever have a UK #1 single, and their song even got to #2 on the Billboard 200. Once again, they joined One Direction in the Where We Are tour, before announcing their album would be available by June 2014. It was quite a success for a debut album, seeing that it reached #1 in thirteen countries and on the Billboard chart.
The year 2014 kept getting better for the boys, as they recorded two singles, "Amnesia" & "Good Girls", and released a new album, "Live SOS". In addition to all of that, you can now find their book in libraries: it's called "Hey, let's make a band".
No doubt it's been an amazing journey so far for the band and their fans, who call themselves the "5 SOS fam". But as many others, you're probably wondering what are their plans for the new year... The answer is another album, and a "Rock out with your socks out" tour.
Award-winning 5 Seconds Of Summer have collected an AMA for New Artist of The Year, an MTV Music Award for Breakthrough band, an ARIA for Song Of The Year, a VMA for Best Lyric Video, 3 EMAs, a TCA and a PCA.
I'd like to give thanks and credits to my friend Nour A. without whom I couldn't have written this piece, since she has provided me with all this precious information about her idols.
